Week 5: Consultation
For this week, I looked back at my dissertation and realized I needed to redo a section of my
literature review focusing on generative typography. After consulting with Kyuha Shim and Andreas, we
discussed the possibility of shifting my research focus to generative textures instead. After
considering this, I decided to proceed with this adjustment as I felt I hadn't made much progress with
generative typography so far. This decision made sense to me and I believe it will help me develop my
ideas better, giving me more confidence in my research and work moving forward.
After confirming
my 3 pillars officially being Generative textures, texture studies and Interaction, I have to go back to
my dissertation draft as well as my rpo section where I have to rewrite the pointers.
What is Generative Textures?
Generative textures refer to textures that are created algorithmically or procedurally, often using computer programming or software. Unlike static textures, which are typically fixed and unchanging, generative textures can exhibit variation, randomness, and complexity. They are often used in digital art, design, and interactive installations to create dynamic and evolving visual experiences.
How to bridge the gap between the physical and digital aspects of Textures?
1. Generative Algorithms: Use algorithms to generate digital textures based on physical inputs or
characteristics. This could involve creating algorithms that mimic the randomness and imperfections of
natural textures.
2. Material Exploration: Experiment with different materials and techniques to create physical textures
that can be translated into digital form. This could involve using sensors to capture the tactile
qualities of materials.
3. Interactive Feedback: Create interactive experiences where users can manipulate digital textures
through
physical actions. For example, touching a physical object could change the texture displayed on a
screen.
4.User Feedback and Testing: Continuously gather feedback from users to understand how they perceive and
interact with the textures, and use this information to refine the design and bridge the gap
further.
I wrote down some questions and spent some time thinking over it and how to tackle these questions in my
dissertation as well as in my catalogie of making.
What is the main focus of the interaction aspect?
1. The main focus of the interaction aspect is to design meaningful and engaging interactions that
highlight the power of touch as a means of communication. This involves creating experiences that are
immersive, intuitive, and responsive to user input, particularly through tactile interactions. The goal
is to bridge the gap between physical and digital textures by designing interactions that appeal to
users' senses and enhance their overall experience.
2.User Perception of Physical vs. Digital Textures: A study comparing how users perceive and interact
with physical textures versus digital textures, and how these perceptions influence user experience.
3. Impact of Tactile Feedback on User Engagement: Research on how tactile feedback, such as haptic
feedback in digital devices, affects user engagement and interaction.
4.Effects of Texture Complexity on User Experience: Research on how the complexity of textures, both
physical and digital, affects user experience and perception.
I wrote down some questions and spent some time thinking over it and how to tackle these questions in my
dissertation as well as in my catalogie of making.
Moving Ahead to Dissertation
I am struggling a lot with my dissertation as writing is not somthing I am particularly good at but I am trying. With reminders from Andreas to slowly write my topics in short sentences followed by lengthing them and constructing them into paragraphs will help me more. Especially since the use of chat gpt should be minimal, I head towards relying more on quillbot and deepl on helping me construct my sentences fluently.
