Week 3: Consultation with Guest Lecture

For today's class, we had a guest lecture sharing from Kyuha Shim from South Korea. Kyuha shared about his craft as a designer as well as a professor in the department of design at korea natiinal university of arts. His projects was very much insightful that allowed me to take some inspiration for my work in the future. I can't rememeber the title of hhis project but it was the one where he created a code and using algorithms to create and develop it into something physical. If i remember correctly it was the use of stamps using the grids. Anyways. this concept of using 2 different mediums really caught my attention and I felt like it is something i can consider as it is what intend to do in my project which is the intention of bridging the dividxe of the digital and physical aspects.

Consulation

I had the opportunity to briefly share my project with him and get his input, picking his brain for the direction of my project. He shared with me about his typography project using the Korean Typeface - Gob Chang. During our discussion about generative typography, I felt lost, as I am not confident in developing those visuals. He and Andreas then suggested that I could potentially shift over to generative textures instead. With that being said, I felt more relieved and at the same time grateful, as it fits the direction of my project more. This was a valuable and rare experience. Coming into this atelier, I was clueless, but with this talk and seeing someone else in this profession and understanding the way their mind creates these design concepts, it is very fascinating to me. Their passion is overflowing, and there's me, feeling stuck.

What i enjoyed from these images is how from just visually looking at it, I can roughly get a sense of how ot feels like. Like the random organic blobs looks satosfying to tiuch whereas the spikey ones looks kinda nasty when felt. I also feel the objects does not have to particularly look like anything specific as it is just the artist creation to illicit such reactions and based on how people would percieve them but is think is cool!

Overall, I am unsure if this is the visual I will stick with or not but it was vousally stimulating that kept me continously scrolling through pinterest. Also with thesevisuals, sonething I havr to keep in mind is also how can I visually replicate these on code.

Kyuha Shim Workshop

Last week during consultation, Andreas asked if I was interested in a P5.js workshop which I agreed to as feeling lost and not knowing where to start. This was an opportunity to be in an evironment to do forced learning. Kyuha's workshop will explore the relationships between culture, colour and emotion with participants, who will create their own interactive system based on a prepared code template that converts their speech input into colour. Students should be familiar with and have a basic understanding of p5js.

In preparation for this workshop, please prepare 3-5 images that illustrate the aspect of culture that interests you. For example, culture can refer to heritage, home, music, youth culture or something else. The meaning of culture is open to interpretation and we are curious about your views and preferences. These images can be your own or images you have sourced online or from a book, etc.

I asked Kou to show me her sketch

Reflection of the Workshop:

I am surprised I managed to keep up..sort of with the workshop. The function I learned using speech is soemthing I would not have come accross by myself so it was a good opportunity to expand my knowledge more on p5.js. I think what interest me in Kou's work was how her shapes were more random whereas mine i stuck to using basic shapes as I could not still quite grasp on what to change besides the word prompts. Overall, I am extremely grateful to have been able to particpate in this workshop and brought me more joy and excitement in p5.js.
