Week 12: Rubbing and Impressions
For my second set of texture studies, I planned to sketch and get texture impressions from my
environment which I cannot physically bring back to show someone. With that, I did some trial bby
grabbing an a4 piece of paper and a 2B pencil and headed around school to sketch the texture impressions
off different surfaces. These texture impressions I sketched from includes, the fire hose rubber,
classroom floor, speaker, leaf, tree, walls and staircase.
Initially, I used a 2B pencil, and i got bored of the lead colour. So I used other mediums such
as oil pastels and charocoal. But sadly it did not work out as expected as the oil pastels were too soft
and oily to capture the impression and the charcoal opacity is too dark that I am unable to cpature the
texture impression. So i settled for the 2B pencils, but on the other hand, colour pencils will have
been a cute idea in a sense that if I did try, I could colour code the textures taken from different
types of floors, stairs etc.
How to showcase the texture impresssions
For this experiment I cut small rectangles of pieces of paper and headed outside to sketch the
imprints of surfaces around lasalle and my home. I had the most fun with this exercise as I realised
the variety of sketches I got was very intriguing. It made me wonder if these tactile surfaces was
purposefully chosen for its reason. Doing a craft like this brings back to me as a designer exploring
things outside of the digital which what intrigued me in the first place.
With the sketches
in hand, I had to consider of ways to present them again. So far I did posters, a booklet. For this to
mimic what I actally did in real life, I took pictures of the surfaces and printed them and used washi
tape and attach it to the top of the actual sketch to show its exact pattern. From sketching, I
observed that these textures usually form different patterns ranging from organic or reptition which
is interesting.
