Week 1: First Week of Final Year
During the first week of classes, we received an outline of the semester along with information on the estimated schedule, the deliverables for the semester, and the FYP. We were briefed on what to prepare for the next lesson which was a presentation of our current state of project idea. In the deck, we were given prompts on what to share about such as what we hope to achieve, and our line of research.
1. Start of Research:
The initial step involved creating a preliminary slide deck to introduce our current topic of
interest,
which will undergo revisions as we progress in the upcoming weeks. Drawing inspiration from my
research
log in Year 2, I continued to delve into the theme of "Perception of Typography." This exploration
allows me to establish a focal point and further develop this research area. Why choose Computation
in
Design?
As I commence my final year of study, the aspiration to experiment with something
new
emerged, fueled by an encounter during my summer internship, where I was introduced to the
term 'generative typography.' This discovery prompted me to select this atelier for my final
year
project. In addition to generative typography, I have consistently gravitated towards projects that
incorporate interactive elements, creating a more immersive and engaging experience for both
individuals
and the project itself.c
With more thought into it, I look back on when I visit yearly
design shows and discovered that the projects that usually catches my eye are when they are
interactive as it hold my attention. My next idea was to identifying the obstacles I will face as I
have not used any of the softwares related to generative art before.
With that in mind, venturing into a new software as well as considering generative typorgaphy as
part of my project seems ambitious and risky as one if fairly new and typography is not my strength.
While interactivity is something I am keen to include, I have to put in more thought on what is the
subject and topic that revolves around this.
2. Preparation of Slides:
Following the outline provided by Andreas for the presentation, I realized I had no idea what
Computation Design was about. My general knowledge of it is merely code that generates design.
This
was concerning for me as I feel like I am already falling behind. Also, with little knowledge, it
was
harder to craft the deck as I still have so many unanswered questions that I need to read up on.
Therefore, I
feel the slides I have created are very generic and not as informative as they should be.
Based
on the keywords, they are a guideline as to what i want to research further about but I ahve yet
to
narrow down on an issue or research idea that I am keen with.
Class Presentation Topics and Key Pillars
3. Class Activity:
In today's class, the focus was on creating a mind map centered around our respective topics of interest. With some dedicated time to sketch out my mind map, I incorporated familiar words from my research log, such as vernacular typography. Following the individual mind mapping, Andreas distributed colored circle stickers, instructing us to place them on our classmates' mind maps, highlighting keywords that intrigued us. The aim of this activity was to facilitate mutual assistance in pinpointing areas of interest. It proved to be an engaging session, offering insights into the research endeavors of my peers. Besides that, I get to have an insight to what my other classmates topic of interest are.
